A Canopy Mesh of Gas Sensors Detects Fire Within Minutes

Instead of watching the forest from outside, this class of system puts sensing inside it: solar-powered nodes strapped to tree trunks, each carrying a metal-oxide gas sensor array for hydrogen, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds plus temperature and humidity, with an on-node classifier and a LoRaWAN mesh relaying alerts through gateways to a satellite or cellular uplink. Dryad Networks' Silvanet is the reference deployment, and its published guidance is the useful number to remember: nodes roughly 100 metres apart in high-risk areas and roughly 500 metres apart in low-risk areas, because a node smells only what the wind brings it. The claim is detection in minutes rather than the hours a smoke plume needs to grow visible from a ridge, and the price of that claim is coverage: sensing radius is small, so protecting a landscape means thousands of nodes, and each must survive a decade unattended on harvested energy.
