A Suppression System Waits for Confirmed Detection Before Releasing

Releasing a gaseous agent or charging a pipe network is expensive and, done wrongly, dangerous, so these systems are not wired to a single detector. The standard arrangement is cross-zoned or coincidence detection: two independent detectors, on separate circuits and often of different types, must both be in alarm before release is authorised. A first alarm raises a warning and starts a pre-discharge timer, typically thirty seconds, during which occupants leave and an abort station can hold release. A pre-action sprinkler system applies the same idea to water: the pipes stay dry, detection opens the pre-action valve to fill them, and water still only flows where a sprinkler head has actually operated, so a damaged pipe or a knocked head cannot flood a data hall. The design principle worth carrying away is that the confidence required from detection scales with the cost of acting on it, which is exactly why a smoke alarm may act on one noisy channel and a suppression release may not.
