ABCD Parameter Models for Short, Medium, and Long Transmission Lines
In power system analysis, transmission line modeling represents a line's distributed series impedance (resistance and inductance) and shunt admittance (capacitance) as either a distributed-parameter system, governed by second-order differential equations whose solution involves hyperbolic functions and a propagation constant, or as a simplified lumped-parameter two-port network when the line length is short relative to the wavelength of the operating frequency. The lumped model is formalized through generalized ABCD parameters relating sending-end voltage and current to receiving-end voltage and current, with distinct approximations (short-line series-impedance-only, medium-line nominal-π, and long-line distributed/hyperbolic models) selected by line length, and with voltage regulation defined as the fractional change in receiving-end voltage between no-load and full-load conditions.
