Acute Myeloid and Lymphoblastic Leukemia Pathophysiology in Hematology
Acute leukemias (myeloid and lymphoblastic) arise when hematopoietic stem cells undergo a differentiation arrest at an immature blast stage combined with uncontrolled clonal proliferation, so that the bone marrow and blood accumulate non-functional myeloblasts or lymphoblasts instead of mature blood cells; the classification into acute myeloid leukemia (AML) versus acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) reflects which branch of hematopoietic differentiation (myeloid versus lymphoid lineage) is affected, and specific recurrent chromosomal translocations define molecular subtypes with distinct pathophysiology and prognosis.
