Adaptive Staircases Find a Just-Noticeable Difference
An adaptive staircase presents a stimulus difference, such as a tilt, and makes the next trial harder after correct responses and easier after errors. The level oscillates around the point where performance reaches a target accuracy, and the average of the reversals estimates the just-noticeable difference. Step rules such as one-up two-down set which point on the psychometric function the staircase converges to.
