Axial Cross-Section Anatomy of the Thoracic Cavity on CT Imaging

Axial cross-sectional anatomy of the thoracic cavity follows a standardized radiologic convention in which the image is oriented as if viewed from the patient's feet, such that the left side of the image corresponds to the patient's right side. Within this plane, the lungs, pleural cavities, mediastinum (containing the heart and pericardium), and great vessels (aorta, superior vena cava) occupy defined spatial relationships, and on CT imaging these structures are differentiated by radiodensity: air-filled spaces (lung parenchyma, bronchial lumina) appear dark while blood-filled vascular structures appear bright.
