Barbiturates and benzodiazepines are GABA receptor–potentiating CNS depressants used in psychiatric and neurologic pharmacology, distinguished by chemical class (barbituric acid derivatives vs. the benzodiazepine ring with a characteristic suffix), therapeutic index, and overdose/withdrawal pharmacodynamics.
