Being the Human in the Loop When Using AI in Nonprofit Organizations

This concept defines "human in the loop" as the principle that a human retains ultimate decision-making authority over what problems AI addresses, whether its outputs align with organizational values, and preservation of relationship-based work, distinguishing healthy augmentation (where AI's process remains explainable to its human user) from problematic dependency. It further outlines organizational AI policy as a structural mechanism—spanning platform awareness, task delegation, capacity expectations, quality oversight, transparency, and values alignment—for scaling responsible AI use, situating this within the domain of applied AI fluency / organizational AI governance, relating to the parent discipline of human-AI collaboration by treating human judgment, explainability, and values alignment as the boundary conditions distinguishing appropriate augmentation from harmful over-reliance.
