Best-Effort Packet Delivery in the Internet Protocol

IP moves individual packets between hosts on a best-effort basis: a packet may be lost, duplicated, delayed, or delivered out of order, and nothing in the network layer notices or repairs that. After learning this a student can state what guarantees IP does and does not give, and can name which failures a higher layer must therefore handle itself.
