Cavity-Launched Focused Phonon-Polaritons in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

A nanophotonic method for launching focused, spatially confined phonon-polariton waves in in-plane-isotropic hexagonal boron nitride, which previously supported only trapped resonant modes. Subwavelength hBN cavities fabricated at a gold/SiO2 edge couple far-field mid-infrared light into propagating polaritons whose wavefront curvature and focusing are set by cavity geometry, achieving record in-plane confinement near a seventieth of the free-space wavelength.
