Cervical Compartments and Deep Cervical Fascia of the Neck in Human Anatomy

The neck is organized into four vertically arranged cervical compartments (one visceral, two vascular, one vertebral) grouped by fascial investment rather than mere spatial proximity, each enclosing functionally related structures. Superficial fascia and deep cervical fascia (itself subdivided into investing, pretracheal, carotid sheath, and prevertebral layers) define and bound these compartments, providing a structural framework linking connective-tissue anatomy to the organization of visceral, vascular, and musculoskeletal structures of the neck. This concept belongs to human gross anatomy, specifically head-and-neck regional anatomy and fascial organization.
