Child Behavior Signs of a Parent's Substance Use

Children often show what is going on at home before adults say a word. A child of a parent who drinks or uses drugs may take on adult jobs. They may cook, care for younger siblings, or put a parent to bed. They may be hungry, tired, or late to school often. Some are quiet, watchful, and anxious, always checking an adult's mood. Others act out, or try very hard to be perfect. A child may know too much about drugs or alcohol for their age, such as names, smells, or how a pipe is used. Many children hide what happens at home. They love their parent and fear the family will be split up. Keep in mind that other stress, illness, or poverty at home can cause the same signs. When a child talks, listen calmly. Tell them it is not their fault. Do not ask them to spy on or blame their parent. Do not promise to keep a secret you may need to share to keep them safe. Write down the child's own words, exactly as they said them. After this Concept you can notice the signs a child shows when a parent's substance use is shaping their home life.
