Compensatory Mechanisms in Heart Failure Pathophysiology

This concept covers the neurohumoral compensatory mechanisms activated in heart failure within cardiovascular pathophysiology. It explains that the body misinterprets reduced cardiac output as hemorrhage or dehydration, triggering the renin-angiotensin system, antidiuretic hormone release, and sympathetic nervous system activation to retain salt and water and increase heart rate and contractility, mechanisms that are adaptive in true volume loss but maladaptive in heart failure because they increase filling pressures and cause edema. It also relates these mechanisms to Starling's law (the relationship between myocardial stretch and contractile force) and to ventricular remodeling (hypertrophy or dilation) as the structural consequence of sustained compensatory activation.
