Components of the Diencephalon in Neuroanatomy

The diencephalon is a division of the brain composed of four anatomic components: the thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus (whose prominent structure is the pineal gland), and subthalamus. This structural classification establishes the diencephalon's identity within the broader hierarchy of brain regions studied in neuroanatomy, with individual nuclei of these components addressed as further subdivisions.
