Compression-only (hands-only) CPR is continuous chest compressions without rescue breaths, recommended for untrained bystanders and for anyone unwilling or unable to give breaths to an adult who has collapsed suddenly. It works because the blood still holds usable oxygen in the first minutes of a sudden cardiac arrest, and uninterrupted compressions keep that oxygen moving to the brain. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at one hundred to one hundred twenty per minute without stopping until help or an AED arrives. Call emergency services first — dispatchers can coach compression-only CPR over the phone.
