Confocal Pinhole

An aperture placed in a plane optically conjugate to the illuminated focal spot, so light from above and below that plane arrives defocused at the aperture and is largely blocked. Closing the pinhole improves sectioning strength and axial resolution but discards signal roughly with the square of its diameter.
