The line spacing J, measured in Hz, is field-independent and encodes geometry: trans-alkene 3J ~12-18 Hz versus cis ~6-12 Hz, and vicinal 3J follows the Karplus dihedral-angle relationship. Shared J values identify which multiplets are coupling partners.
