Curing is the Fraction of a Grassland That Has Become Dead Fuel
Curing is the percentage of a herbaceous fuel bed — grass, annual weeds — that has senesced and become dead fuel available to burn. Annual grasses cure completely each year, moving from fully green to fully cured over a few weeks as they set seed and die, and perennials cure partially. Curing matters because dead grass is governed by the 1-hour timelag response, so a cured grassland can go from unburnable at breakfast to fast-spreading by mid-afternoon, while an uncured one cannot.
