The cardiovascular system is defined as the blood-circulating organ system responsible for transporting nutrients, gases, hormones, and blood cells throughout the body. It is composed of a pump (the heart), blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels (which drain excess interstitial fluid), and its physiology is characterized by a pressure gradient that falls progressively from the highest point near the aortic valve, through resistance vessels, capillaries, and back to the heart via veins.
