Delay Discounting: Preferring Smaller-Sooner over Larger-Later Rewards

In a delay discounting task participants choose repeatedly between a smaller reward available sooner and a larger reward available later. The choices locate indifference points at which the two options are valued equally, and the decline in subjective value with delay is usually described by a hyperbolic curve. Steeper discounting indicates stronger preference for immediate reward and is associated with impulsive behaviour.
