Detector Gain and Offset

Gain sets the multiplication applied to detected photoelectrons and offset sets the black level of the digitized signal; gain amplifies signal and noise together and never adds information. Correct practice is the lowest gain that fills the dynamic range without clipping, with offset set so background sits just above zero rather than clipped to it.
