Digit Span Measures Short-Term Memory Capacity

In a digit span task sequences of digits are presented and recalled in order, with sequence length increasing until recall fails. The longest length recalled reliably is the span, around seven items for forward recall and fewer for backward recall. Forward span mainly loads passive storage while backward span adds manipulation, which is why the two are reported separately.
