Dual-Wavelength Fiber Laser Operation via Structured Er/Yb-Doped Silica Cores

Spatially structuring erbium and ytterbium dopants within a silica fibre core, instead of co-doping them randomly, lets a fibre laser emit simultaneously at both the ytterbium (~1042 nm) and erbium (~1550 nm) wavelengths with controlled output. Random co-doping suppresses the ytterbium line through Yb-to-Er energy transfer, so the engineered core geometry is what preserves dual-wavelength operation and generalizes to multi-wavelength active fibres.
