Edema in heart, liver, and kidney failure explains why each of these organ failures makes fluid collect in the body. The shared idea is a balance: fluid is pushed out of capillaries by hydrostatic pressure and pulled back by blood protein (colloid osmotic pressure) and by lymph drainage, and each organ failure upsets that balance in its own way. Doctors use this to match a swelling pattern, such as leg, belly, or eye puffiness, to the likely failing organ.
