Embolism and Infarction in Pathology

Embolism and infarction explain how a traveling clot or other plug can block a blood vessel and kill the tissue it feeds. An embolus is a mass, usually a blood clot but sometimes fat, air, or amniotic fluid, that is carried by the blood and lodges downstream. An infarct is the area of necrosis (dead tissue) caused by sharply reduced blood flow, and its look depends on the organ's blood supply.
