A method for representing waveguide-fed, resonant metamaterial elements (such as the complementary electric inductive-capacitive element, cELC) as lumped-element equivalent circuits. Effective electric and magnetic polarizabilities are extracted from a single element's scattering parameters and fitted to circuit components, with an effective transformer capturing the field enhancement at resonance. The circuit picture gives intuition for how element geometry controls coupling and radiation, and lets designers predict responses (including added lumped components like varactors) from only one or two full-wave simulations, accelerating metasurface aperture design.
