Erythropoiesis and Red Blood Cell Formation in Hematology
Erythropoiesis is the regulated hematopoietic differentiation pathway by which pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow give rise, through committed erythroid progenitors, to enucleated circulating erythrocytes; its governing principle is negative-feedback control in which renal peritubular interstitial cells sense tissue oxygen tension and secrete erythropoietin to set the rate of progenitor survival, proliferation, and terminal maturation.
