Flame Length Is the Field-Observable Proxy for Fireline Intensity

Fireline intensity cannot be measured directly at a fire, but flame length can be estimated from a photograph or an observer's report, and Byram established that the two are tied together: flame length rises with intensity raised to a power of roughly \( 0.46 \), so a sixteen-fold rise in intensity produces only about a fourfold rise in flame length. This compressed relationship is why flame length is a robust field estimate and also why it is easy to underestimate how much more energetic a taller-flamed fire really is. Flame length is measured along the slanted flame from the base at the fuel surface to the tip, which distinguishes it from flame height, the vertical distance to the tip; in a wind-driven fire with a strongly tilted flame these differ substantially and confusing them corrupts any intensity estimate. Flame lengths are inherently variable and observers quote an average over the front rather than the tallest flare.
