Floating Caliper Operation

A floating (sliding) caliper has pistons on one side only: hydraulic pressure pushes the inner pad out while the reaction slides the caliper body inward on its pins, pulling the outer pad against the rotor — equal clamping from a single piston. Fixed calipers instead use opposed pistons and no sliding motion.
