Fluorescence Background in Raman Spectroscopy

Trace fluorophores emit a broad, slowly varying signal in the same spectral window as the Raman bands and can be two to three orders of magnitude more intense, burying the peaks and adding shot noise. It is fought by moving to near-IR or UV excitation, photobleaching the sample, time-gating the detection, or modelling and subtracting the smooth baseline.
