Follicular Ovarian Cysts in Female Reproductive Pathology

A follicular ovarian cyst is a benign cyst arising from an ovarian follicle, formed when fluid accumulates within the follicle, and is histologically defined by two layers: an outer granulosa cell layer and an inner theca cell layer. This concept situates follicular cysts within the normal physiology of ovarian folliculogenesis, in which one of the many follicles present in the ovary ruptures monthly to release an oocyte, distinguishing them from other ovarian cystic lesions such as endometriotic (chocolate) cysts, which arise from ectopic endometrial implantation rather than follicular fluid accumulation.
