To filter, transform the signal, multiply its spectrum by a desired frequency response (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass), and transform back; via the convolution theorem this is equivalent to convolving with the filter's impulse response, and sharp brick-wall cutoffs cost ringing in the time domain.
