Fuel Moisture is Estimated From Weather and Checked Against Fuel Sticks
Nobody measures the moisture of a whole landscape, so operational fuel moisture is modelled and then spot-checked. The modelled path starts from equilibrium moisture content, an empirical function of air temperature and relative humidity, then applies the timelag response for each size class and corrections for solar heating, shading, slope and recent rain. The reference check is the 10-hour fuel stick: a standard set of ponderosa pine dowels of known dry weight, mounted on a rack \( 25 \) cm above litter at a weather station, weighed automatically so that mass above dry weight is water. Oven-drying clipped samples remains the laboratory standard, and remote sensing supplies the live side. Each method disagrees with the others by a few percent, and the disagreement is largest in exactly the marginal conditions that matter. The confusion this resolves is treating a fuel moisture readout as a measurement when it is usually a model output.
