Functional Components of Cranial Nerves I–VI in Neuroanatomy

In neuroanatomy, cranial nerves are classified by the functional components of nerve fibers they carry, a framework that categorizes fiber types by the kind of information conveyed and its origin (somatic vs. visceral) or direction (afferent/sensory vs. efferent/motor). The five defined functional components are general somatic afferent (general body sensation), general visceral afferent (visceral sensation), special afferent (special senses: smell, vision, taste, equilibrium, audition), general somatic efferent (skeletal muscle innervation), general visceral efferent (glands, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle), and branchial efferent (innervation of structures derived from the pharyngeal arches).
