Hematoxylin Counterstaining
A light hematoxylin counterstain renders nuclei blue so the chromogenic signal can be localized to a cell compartment and the section can be assessed morphologically. Over-counterstaining masks weak DAB, and in fluorescence DAPI or Hoechst plays the equivalent role.
