Heterotrophic and Autotrophic Strategies for Bacterial Cell Growth in Microbiology

Bacterial cell reproduction proceeds by binary fission, and new cell material is assembled through a hierarchical biosynthetic pathway: fueling reactions produce precursor metabolites and energy (ATP, reducing power), which are converted into building blocks (amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, nucleotides), polymerized into macromolecules (proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, nucleic acids), and finally assembled into cellular structures.
