Holding Potato Soil Near pH 5.2 and Skipping Lime Suppresses Common Scab

Common scab is greatly suppressed at pH 5.2 or below and worsens above 5.5. Keep lime, wood ash and fresh manure off the potato patch; where other crops share the bed, pH 5.5–6.0 is the usual compromise, and lime goes on after the potatoes in the rotation.
