Home-Based Care as an Alternative to Inpatient Stem Cell Transplant
Outpatient- or home-based delivery of stem cell transplantation is a care-delivery model in hematology-oncology in which conditioning chemotherapy/radiation and infusion occur in a clinical setting while the recovery period is managed at home through remote monitoring (daily bloodwork, symptom assessment, and telemedicine visits) rather than prolonged inpatient hospitalization. The underlying principle, evaluated through staged feasibility and comparative outcome studies, is that structured ambulatory monitoring can substitute for continuous inpatient observation without compromising safety, while potentially altering outcomes such as infection risk (microbiome) and quality of life.
