Home Safety Modifications

Most elder falls happen at home, and the home itself is a modifiable risk: loose rugs, poor lighting, cluttered pathways, and bathrooms without support are recurring culprits. High-value modifications include grab bars at the toilet and shower, night lights along the bed-to-bathroom route, non-slip mats, secured or removed rugs, and railings on both sides of stairs. A room-by-room walkthrough — done with the older adult, not just for them — finds hazards that daily familiarity hides. Modifications work best when introduced as supports for independence rather than as signs of decline.
