Human-AI Cooperation as Social Contact for Reducing Mental Illness Stigma

How a cooperative task shared between a person and a conversational AI can lower social stigma toward people with mental illness. Two-way human-chatbot cooperation, in which the human and a chatbot presenting a lived-experience identity work together on a task, changes attitudes more than one-way information dissemination by creating social-contact relationships and raising perceived competence and likability of the agent; role-context misalignment can produce unintended negative effects.
