Infection Control in Home Care

Home caregiving involves body fluids, wounds, shared surfaces, and an older adult whose immune system fights infections poorly — so infection control is a daily discipline, not a hospital specialty. The pillars are hand hygiene at defined moments, gloves for any contact with body fluids or broken skin, separate handling of soiled laundry, and routine cleaning of high-touch surfaces like rails, commodes, and doorknobs. Caregivers should stay current on vaccinations and keep visibly ill visitors away, because most home infections arrive with people. These habits protect the caregiver as much as the person receiving care.
