Intracellular accumulations and pathologic calcification explain what builds up inside dying or stressed cells and how pathologists recognize it. Cells can store fats, proteins, glycogen, pigments, and calcium, and each shows a typical look under the microscope or with special stains. Calcification is dystrophic when local tissue damage causes it and metastatic when high blood calcium causes it.
