Irregular Subjunctive Stems
Nine verbs ignore the ils-stem rule: être (sois/soyons), avoir (aie/ayons), aller (aille/allions), faire (fasse), pouvoir (puisse), savoir (sache), vouloir (veuille/voulions), plus falloir (faille) and valoir (vaille). Être and avoir also take irregular endings and must be memorized outright — they later serve as auxiliaries for the past subjunctive.
