Ischium Location and Bony Landmarks in Anatomy

In gross anatomy, the ischium is defined as the posteroinferior of the three bones composing the hip bone, uniting with the ilium and pubis at the acetabulum and contributing, via its ramus, to the formation of the ischiopubic ramus and the obturator foramen. Its bony landmarks—the ischial spine and ischial tuberosity—are theoretically significant because they define the boundaries of the greater and lesser sciatic notches, structures that later become sciatic foramina.
