Lexical Decision Tasks Measure Word Recognition Speed

In a lexical decision task letter strings are presented and the participant decides as quickly as possible whether each is a real word. Reaction times are shorter for frequent than for rare words, and non-words that resemble real words are rejected more slowly. The task measures the speed of access to the mental lexicon and is the standard baseline for priming experiments.
