LicenseGPT: A Fine-Tuned Foundation Model for Dataset License Compliance Analysis

LicenseGPT is a foundation model fine-tuned to interpret publicly available dataset licenses: from the raw license text it predicts whether commercial use is permitted, prohibited, or ambiguous and states the rights and obligations that follow. It is fine-tuned on a curated corpus of 500 dataset licenses annotated by software IP lawyers, and it substantially outperforms both general-purpose and legal foundation models on prediction agreement while cutting expert analysis time from roughly 108 to 6 seconds per license. Students learn how domain-specialized fine-tuning turns a general foundation model into a compliance-analysis tool, how such a tool is evaluated against expert judgement, and why human oversight remains necessary for ambiguous or aggregated licenses.
