Macromolecules in Chemistry

Macromolecules are large, complex molecules built from repeating smaller subunits (monomers) joined by covalent bonds into polymers, formed via dehydration synthesis (condensation) and broken down via hydrolysis. In chemistry and biochemistry, the four major classes of biological macromolecules — carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids — are distinguished by their characteristic monomer units, bonding patterns, and the specific structural and functional roles they play in living systems. This concept belongs to organic/biochemistry and underlies the study of molecular structure-function relationships in biological systems.
