Management of Hypoxia and Fluid Resuscitation in Pneumonia

In pneumonia, alveolar consolidation causes hypoxia via a right-to-left shunt mechanism, in which deoxygenated pulmonary arterial blood passes through non-aerated alveoli and returns to the pulmonary veins without being oxygenated, mixing with oxygenated blood from unaffected lung and lowering overall arterial oxygen concentration. Pneumonia can also produce systemic physiological derangement through dehydration and septic shock, with associated hypotension and acute kidney injury, reflecting core principles of respiratory physiology and shock management within pulmonary/critical care medicine.
