Mechanical Lift Transfers

A mechanical lift (often called a Hoyer lift) uses a sling and a hydraulic or powered boom to move a person who cannot bear weight, sparing both bodies entirely. It is the required method when a person cannot stand, is too heavy to assist manually, or has fallen and cannot get up with light help. Safe use depends on the right sling size, correct sling placement under the person, checking every strap attachment before lifting, and moving slowly with the person lowered as soon as possible. Never operate an unfamiliar lift without instruction, and follow the device's requirement if it calls for two operators.
