Melasma in Dermatologic Pathology

Melasma is a dermatologic disorder of acquired hyperpigmentation resulting from melanin overproduction, classically associated with estrogen exposure (pregnancy, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy) and exacerbated by ultraviolet sun exposure. It presents as a light-brown, homogeneous, non-elevated, non-scaling macule in sun-exposed areas, most commonly affecting persons of color, particularly Hispanic patients, within the domain of pigmentary skin disorders in dermatologic pathology.
